Undergraduate Psychology Major at the University of Miami
ABOUT
In the summer of 2021, I decided to take on an intro to psychology course for fun and I ended the class realizing that I needed to switch out of my biology major at the time. During that class I remember being fascinated by my professor’s lectures about the human mind and how it influences our behaviors. Coming from a science major already this was just the next step in narrowing down my career path. Growing up with my father being a physician, I always knew deep down I wanted to work in the medical field. It was during this summer of 2021, that I ended up realizing I wanted to be a psychologist.
Currently it is the fall semester of my junior year here at the University of Miami, and I finally found my plan of study and decided to major in psychology. I find myself being extremely interested in the topics discussed in my classes. Psychology majors focus greatly on preparing their students with proper research method skills and statistical analysis. This major is definitely for someone who is naturally drawn to science and math topics since many psychology students take biology, chemistry, plus their labs, and calculus classes.
Similarly too, many other science based majors, psychology uses the IMRAD method and statistical methods as well. Using these methods allows us to analyze and study the mind and behavior of humans or animals. This major has many job opportunities from human service careers, mental health careers, business careers, educational careers, and animal health careers. All these different career paths do differ in license requirements and degree type. The research and knowledge that comes out of all of these careers has helped us humans’ and wildlife drastically. For example many people have benefited from seeing and listening to psychologists for mental health disorders since they have an immense amount of knowledge and information about human behavior. Many people who major in psychology end up doing research/experimental work which has made immense discoveries in our world.
In 1971, The Stanford Prison Experiment was conducted which led us to discover how regular people can be transformed and brainwashed easily. Philip George Zimbardo an American psychologist who was the conductor of this experiment said “ if you put good apples into a bad situation, you’ll get bad apples” ( Philip Zimbardo). This was a crucial stepping stone for the study of psychology because it brought upon lots of attention and controversy about human behavior by the public. The world was intrigued by this experiment so much it brought on many more crucial discoveries pushing our knowledge about mind and behavior further and further. Psychology is a wonderful field with many opportunities to dive into that can have wonderful impacts whether to a single individual or an entire population.
